Cost-effective Engineering Solutions

Engineering design

As an extension to your own engineering department we give you a flexible, highly skilled and highly available design resource.

For production or marketing focussed companies without in-house design, we offer a high quality design resource without the hassle and considerable cost of building up your own team.

Chelker will happily work to your own drawing office procedures. We regularly maintain separate drawing standards, parts libraries, and operating procedures to match individual customer requirements. We understand ISO9001 and other quality standards, and the CE marking regulations.

ENGINEERING DESIGN CASE STUDIES

JW FROEHLICH

AUTOMOTIVE ASSEMBLY AND TEST

J W Froehlich UK are based in Laindon in Essex. They design, manufacture, install and support a wide range of assembly and test equipment for a worldwide customer base, predominantly to the Automotive Industry.

Chelker works closely with JWF to supply engineering design services. Typical design projects are engine seat and valve insertion machines, leak test equipment for cylinder blocks, cam cap assembly machines, and cold engine testing machines.

Mechanical design services include from sub-assembly to complete machine design and detailing. Work is carried out to JWF’s own standards in SolidWorks using the JWF supplied drawing templates and parts libraries.

BHL
CONVEYOR SYSTEMS

BHL Conveyor Technology was established in 1992 and has significant experience within the mechanical handling industry. The company has developed a reputation for designing bespoke and unique conveyor systems to solve complex engineering challenges.

Chelker have worked with BHL on a number of special projects including submerged effluent conveyors, roof tile handling conveyors, and a magnetic conveyor for food can handling.

The tile handling conveyor project required design for an aggressive environment including heat, abrasive dust and weak acid spray. The equipment had to be designed to fit into an existing production line, requiring on-site measurements to be taken out-of-hours, and consideration being given to rapid installation between production shifts.

DUNLOP OIL AND MARINE
HOSE TESTING SYSTEM

Dunlop Oil and Marine are the leading specialist supplier of floating hoses for offshore transfer of crude oil and gas, and are part of the Continental ContiTech group. We have completed a number of design projects for Dunlop involving special purpose equipment, including a Mandrel Extraction Machine (MEM) and a Reeling Hose Test Rig (RHTR).

The RHTR brief was to design and develop a means of simulating the effect of repeatedly reeling and unreeling a hose onto a drum, under operational tension and internal pressures.

An initial feasibility project was undertaken to look at different ways of simulating operational conditions, and evaluate the best and most cost effective solution. Following successful completion, a design specification was produced by Chelker and we initiated a design project for the test rig.

The equipment was fully designed and costed and detailed manufacturing drawings and parts lists were delivered to Dunlop. Documentation included stress analysis of various aspects of the rig using FEA, structural engineering reports of the frame and drum, foundation design (carried out by our structural engineering partners), hydraulic control system design, transducer selection, transducer integration, data logging, cable management, and safeguarding.

The final system was 36m long with a 9m diameter reeling drum, capable of testing hose strings up to 1.1m in diameter and 25m in length under a 60 tonne tensile load.
